One of 10 plywood Shrimpers based on the original Roger Dongray design, 'May' was built by Joanna Lea under supervision from Roger Dongray. She has been in her current ownership from new and been cruised on the East Coast as well as France. 'May' has been stored undercover, untouched in a barn for the last 10 years and therefore her new owner will need to check all the systems (rig, sails, engines, electronics etc.) to get her back in to commission. An opportunity to own one of the few plywood Shrimpers, which are known to sail very well compared to their GRP versions.
Viewing strictly by appointment through our Essex office - 01621 785600.
The simple accommodation offers sitting headroom in a single cabin with two berths. The berths are set right forward allowing for large cockpit lockers aft. Single burner gimballed paraffin stove (requires re-hanging). Space for wash basin.
Gaff rigged. Wooden spars and bow sprit. Mast stepped in tabernacle. Stainless steel running rigging.
Tan mainsail and furling genoa.
'May' is a Shrimper 19 built in 1991 by Joanna Lea (Lea Marine) under guidance from the designer, Roger Dongray. Blue painted marine grade 10mm plywood hull, with 18mm plywood bulkheads and Columbian Pine stringers with hardwood trims. Glued and screwed SP Systems epoxy resins. Lifting centreplate operated from the forward end of the cockpit. Tiller steering to transom hung rudder with lifting section.
The parts for 10 Shrimpers were all supplied by Roger Dongray after he initially built his plywood prototype, to Mike Hughes who helped him build it. Eight boats were built by Mike Hughes, leaving two "kits" after his death. It is believed that Roger Dongray built one of these (number 10) with Joanna Lea (a graduate of Falmouth Marine College), who then completed the other one (number 9).

General note on safety equipment: Any safety equipment such as liferaft, fire extinguishers and flares etc., are usually personal to the current owner(s) and if being left on board as part of the sale of a used vessel, may require routine servicing, replacement, or changing to meet a new owner’s specific needs.
