Designed by James Krogen, the KE52′ combines classic, timeless style with exceptional seakeeping and efficiency. Her plumb stem, raised bow, and broad beam forward allow her to slice through the waves with ease while providing surprising space in her accommodations. Her low profile allows her to get under bridges as low as 15′ and with a draft of just 4′, she’ll take you places most 50 footers won’t. Her semi-displacement hull delivers trawler efficiency at displacement speeds with true cruise capabilities in the mid-to-upper teens. And her generous keel provides stability and protection for her twin 26×25 propellers.
Boarding a Krogen Express couldn't be easier with a large transom door and wide boarding gates on either side of the spacious, covered cockpit. Ample storage for lines, fenders, cleaning supplies, folding bicycles and more is provided by the cavernous lazarette below. Entering the salon through double, weathertight aluminum doors, her owners are treated to an inviting cherry wood interior. Along with her sumptuous joinery, old world craftsmanship is obvious with the quality of her appointments and overall exceptional fit and finish. Legendary Krogen livability is evidenced by the large side windows and generous headroom along with the integral galley-up design.
Beneath the cockpit sole, accessed through a hatch, is a surprisingly spacious lazarette. In addition to the steering gear and davit motor/pump assembly, there is abundant storage available for lines, fenders, cleaning supplies, boat hook, folding bikes, emergency tiller, secondary anchor, and more.
The covered aft deck is accessed by wide, full-depth boarding gates on both sides and in the transom. 4 attractive deck chairs and a dining table provide for comfortable entertaining. Steps on either side allow for easy access to the side decks. Hawse pipes allow for line handling both aft and to the sides. A Scandvik shower in the transom provides hot and cold water for washing down. Speakers overhead are controlled by the Fusion remote to starboard. Located in the forward bulkhead to starboard are the 75′ Cablemaster shorepower cord, dockside water and cable TV inlets, freshwater outlet, and 110V receptacle. Accessed through the generous boarding gate, the fiberglass swim platform allows aft access and can be boarded from the folding ladder beneath. The spacious lazarette is accessed through a hatch in the teak sole on the centerline.
The salon is entered from the cockpit through sturdy, weathertight double doors. Large opening windows, generous headroom, and beautiful cherrywood joinery combine to provide a sense of comfortable livability. Inviting leather Stressless chairs to port and a built-in L-settee to starboard are perfectly situated for enjoying the newer Sharp LED TV. To port is generous underdeck storage and there's additional storage beneath the settee. The custom cherrywood hi-lo table has leaves that fold out for expanded seating capacity and can be moved outside for dining al fresco. Silhouette blinds provide privacy and protection from the sun.
Below the salon you’ll find the house battery bank (3 Mastervolt AGM 8Ds (2019) at 675 Ah total, Cable Master drum (75′ 50A cord), Mastervolt Mass Sine 2000 watt inverter, Mastervolt 80 amp charger, a 2000 gph Rule bilge pump, and mufflers for the main engines and genset. Access is simple with both a day hatch and larger service hatch in support of major mechanical work. There’s also a removable bulkhead forward to allow engine room access when necessary.
The gourmet galley is located up where her chef can always be part of the action. She’s well equipped for meal preparation with a 3-burner, Force 10 propane range, GE 14 cu. ft. refrigerator, GE microwave oven, and deep Elkay sink with pullout sprayer faucet. Neutral Corian counter tops are easy to maintain and will complement any decor, and the raised section is ideal for serving the crew. Traditional round port lights provides ventilation while abundant storage ensures a good home can be found for all provisions. Beneath the starboard side bookcase, the U-line ice maker frees up space in the ice box and ensures drinks will be well chilled.
The centerline helm console in the raised pilothouse is equipped with a full complement of newer Raymarine navigational electronics, all within easy reach of the fine Buff Ultraleather Stidd helm chair. Precise Mathers Micro-Commander electronic controls allow for smooth operation of the twin 440hp Yanmars while her rudders are guided by a custom, handcrafted cherry helm wheel. Electronics include twin 12″ Raymarine Hybridtouch chartplotters, Raymarine p70 autopilot, and Raymarine i70 dedicated depth display. Communication is handled by a newer ICOM IC-M505 VHF radio and a CommandMic III for redundancy. Two large chart drawers and a wide, lighted table to starboard allow for easy storage and use of paper charts. The Side Power bow thruster assures confident close quarters handling. Controls for the dual trumpet Kahlenberg horns, intermittent Exalto wiper/washer system, Maxwell windlass, and updated Bennett trim tabs are all close at hand
The pilothouse watch berth is elevated for optimal forward visibility, long enough for naps underway, and converts to a 3/4 double berth to accommodate overnight guests. A table provides a convenient work surface and the wall mounted lamp to starboard makes this an ideal location to retire with a good book. Above the settee, a half hull model in her original Jade Mist Green showcases her elegant lines and makes for interesting conversation. Beneath the settee are several small lockers for equipment storage. Ship quality, weathertight Dutch doors lead directly to the wide side decks while stairs to the port side of the settee provide easy access to the flybridge. Textilene screens for pilothouse (and salon) windows provide sun protection.
An L-settee that easily pulls out to a double berth highlights the flexible nature of the guest stateroom, while a Pullman berth adds additional sleeping capacity. Located inboard is a large desk with drawers. Aft and outboard is a large hanging locker while beneath the settee are two additional large drawers. Two port lights and a screened hatch overhead make the GSR feel open and airy while 3 wall mounted lamps provide additional lighting for reading. The bilge area below, or pump room, is home to the 3 CruiseAir reverse-cycle air conditioners, the water heater, fresh water pump, and shower drain system. Adjacent to the GSR is the stacked GE washer dryer while a full head is located across the companionway.
Beneath the guest stateroom, separated from engine room heat, is a dedicated space for 3 CruiseAir AC units, the freshwater pressure system, water heater, shower drain system, and the vacuum generator for the guest head.
Located to port abaft the guest stateroom is the guest head with separate shower.
A standard queen island berth is the centerpiece of the master stateroom. With over 7′ of headroom and light provided by 4 ports and a large screened deck hatch, the MSR feels surprisingly generous for a motoryacht this size. Hanging lockers on both sides, 6 deep drawers under the berth, and a dresser with drawers (8) and shelved storage ensure her owners have ample room for their belongings. A massive LCD TV, with soundbar, over the dresser provides evening entertainment. A look beneath the berth reveals cavernous storage and provides access to the dedicated battery bank for the bow thruster and windlass.
The ensuite master head features a spacious stand up shower with molded in seat and bi-fold door, Vacuflush head, and fiddled Corian countertop.
Below the master stateroom is a bilge area with access to the holding tank and related systems.
While her pilothouse is fully capable, most Krogen Express owners prefer operating their vessels up top where they can better experience her cruising capabilities. Conversations are easy as little engine noise makes its way up here, leaving only the soothing sounds of sea breezes and ocean waves with which to compete. A frameless venturi windscreen deflects air above the captain sitting in the comfortable, raised centerline Stidd helm chair. Matching Raymarine electronics provides full navigational support along with the large Danforth compass. An ICOM VHF radio provides communications. Controls for the bow thruster, trim tabs, and windlass are close at hand. The 4′ HD radar scanner and satellite TV dome are mounted on an aluminum spar-style mast that can be lowered when needed. Shaded by a beige Sunbrella bimini top, the L-settee provides ample seating for crew and guests and contains storage beneath for the extensive canvas package as well as a propane locker. Situated aft of the settee, the open boat deck easily accommodates two folding deck chairs and serves as access to the 11′ 4-seat luxury tender. This is the ideal place to enjoy a cup of morning coffee or catch a beautiful evening sunset. The dinghy, with a raised console and seating for 4, is powered by a 25 hp 4-stroke Yamaha outboard and launched with the hydraulic Nautical Structures davit.
Access forward is simple with just two easy steps to the wide side decks on both sides and a single step just forward of the pilothouse Dutch doors. A high rail inspires confidence and a feeling of safety and the crew will find line handling simplified compared to similar vessels with raised bulwarks and fashion plates covering side decks. The two spring cleats, mounted conveniently on the toe rails, couldn’t be easier for securing lines, while the lack of a Portuguese bridge makes for quick passage forward. Deck fills for fuel and water can be found on both sides mid ships while the waste pumpout is forward to starboard. On the port side of the pilothouse forward are secondary 50A shorepower and cable TV connection points. The Spade plow style anchor can be retrieved easily by her Maxwell Liberty windlass with foot pedals located to port and can be cleaned by either the raw water or fresh water washdowns. The compartmented anchor locker is accessed by a ship quality Freeman deck hatch and houses the ground tackle, comprised of 50′ of 3/8″ high test galvanized chain and 200′ of 3/4″ line. A ladder ensures easy access below and there is ample additional space for fenders, lines, and washdown hose.
An exceptional stand up engine room houses a pair of powerful 440 hp Yanmar 6-cylinder diesels which can be easily accessed all around. The engines are fired by dedicated starting batteries and drive through matched Twin Disc transmissions. Vibration is kept to a minimum with the standard Aqua Drive systems. The 12kw Northern Lights genset sits on the centerline and has its own starting battery, isolated from the others to ensure she starts every time. A Reverso fluid changing system is connected to both engines, both transmissions, and the genset to improve serviceability, while a fuel transfer pump makes equalizing the tanks a breeze. As with the water tanks, diesel fuel levels can be easily assessed with convenient sight tubes. An automatic fire suppression system, freshwater washdown, and storage for tools and supplies above and alongside the water tanks are additional features welcomed by her owners.
