The Mikelson 48 is one of those yachts that emerge when experienced yachtsmen and a talented designer get together with a shipyard that can fulfill their wishes exactly. The project began with Pat Sullivan and Dick Peterson, who recognized the need for a sedan/sportfisher that would exceed all similar boats in performance, features and value. The two men, with years of offshore experience, sat down with designer Tom Fexas and created the Mikelson concept of a fast and stylish yacht at a reasonable price.
With a pair of standard Caterpillar 3208 TA engines of 375 hp, the 48 tops out at 27 knots, or provides a mile-gobbling 20-knot cruise at just 20 gph, resulting in a healthy 1,000-mile cruising range - an essential for Western yachtsmen.
Unlike many boats built offshore, the Mikelson uses American and European materials and products for maximum strength and reliability. From the Hexel fiberglass materials and Divinycell hull cores to the Kohler sinks, from the bronze Grocor sea strainers to the VDO gauges, every item aboard the Mikelson 48 is a no-compromiser.
The hull and deck are each one-piece sections that use 1" Divinycell coring combined with Divinylite compound and Hexel WF-18 fiberglass materials.
The longitudinal stringers are also cored fiberglass, while transverse bulkheads are marine plywood stabilized with extra-wide tabbing. The hull-deck joint is secured mechanically with stainless-steel fasteners and additional fiberglass tabbing as well. This Mikelson 48, is the ever popular 2 cabin layout.
