A truly classic expedition yacht with real history which has been generously appointed and converted to a very high standard for private use.
Originally built in Wilhelmshaven in 1951 as Nickel to deliver coal to steam-driven river dredgers. She became Wittesand when she was converted for the WSA into a sounding and survey boat in 1974/75. Now renamed Wellesand, she is 43.7m long, 7.6m wide and draws 2.3m. She was overhauled and made seaworthy for her new owner at the MWB Shipyard in Bremerhaven before leaving for Egypt.
Wellesand is still equipped with the MWM 440kW main engine and bow thruster installed in 1988 and now overhauled at MWB. The main engine provided 10.1 knots and the bow thruster improved maneuverability. Her super structures and bridge were enlarged. A technology conversion took place in 1983 when the latest in sounding and survey equipment was installed and the boat took over the job of an older sounding vessel. At that time her crane was also removed and replaced by two modern davits for tenders.
Whilst in refit in Egypt in 2007 the old crew cabins were converted into luxury guest cabins all appointed with en-suite bathrooms, a saloon and bar area were added forward of the existing superstructure forming a new line to the boat while adding a large sun-deck above which was laid with teak on the deck to give a luxury feel. The monkey deck was then fitted with teak and lounges fitted. The entire exterior of the vessel was treated and then underwent a complete new paint job. In addition to this new crew accommodation was added to the old hold / workshop under the foredeck.
Wellesand now located in Sifah (Muscat), Oman and is used as a private luxury live aboard yacht, the cruising area is the Mediterranean Sea, the entire Red Sea (incl. Yemen), Oman, Indian Ocean, Dubai and Emirati waters of the Arab Gulf.
She provides the ideal platform for any intrepid owner/explorer to visit the beautiful cruising grounds many modern yachts simply wouldn't allow.
