The new one-design
In the Spring of 2005, the New York Yacht Club approached several designers requesting a proposal for a new One Design yacht for the Club members and other sailors to enjoy traditional Corinthian racing. The boat was to be fast, fun to sail and rate well under the IRC Rule.
Nautor's Swan teamed up with the German Frers design team to present their proposal. After a thorough investigation of all of the submissions, the NYYC OD Committee selected the Nautor/Frers team to design and build the new One Design yacht. Thus the birth of a new Swan!
The new yacht is designed to take full advantage of the latest thinking in design and construction. The yacht is light and extremely fast.It is feature for the first time on any Swan a retractable bow sprit. This allows for a very large and easy to handle downwind sail inventory.
As per requirement of the NYYC OD Commitee, it is a racer/cruiser with the ability to win races and provide for enjoyable cruising. Nautor produces the yachts with a bright and airy interior. They are fitted with a complete inventory of standard equipment, provide a choice of two interor layouts, and offer an intelligent list of options.
The high construction standards ensure laminates and weight is consistent throughout the fleet. The cored hull and deck are infused "E" glass with carbon reinforcements. The keel construction that has been engineered to absorb grounding loads at high speed.
The fractional rigged carbon fiber mast is supported by 20 degree swept back double spreaders, a permanent backstay and no runners. Ease of handling is achieved with a full batten mainsail with lazy jacks and a furling jib. A retractable bowsprint allows the use of an efficient gennaker for reaching and running conditions.
Double wheels provide optimum gear ratio for helm feeling and steering position. The mainsheet trimmer is close to the helmsman with all the controls at hand. thanks to the generous freeboard the coach roof is relatively small, allowing for a dry boat and the desired headroom below. The side decks are wide, leaving ample space for handling the boat and trimming the sails.
The deck is simple and functional planned for the ease of handling while both racing and cruising. All halyards and reef lines are lead aft to the cockpit below decks, through special structural conduits which double as cabin top reinforcements.
Carbon retractable bowsprit
The interior arrangement offers good comfort, both at anchor and at sea, and it is based on a well proven layout with two options. These two options are offered to the prospective owners within the class rules. The result is a high quality, simple structure, with the accent on an attractive, modern, fresh design. there is a focus on ease of maintenance and includes a generous use of traditional teak in selected areas.
