“Margaret B2” has been lightly cruised in the Pacific Northwest each summer. She has been spared the harsh sun and intense salt of the tropics. Her hatches are free of crazing and metals free of corrosion. The interior teak joinery is in remarkable condition for her age. The engine room and bilges are clean and well maintained. A Fisher Panda genset was installed in 2013 and has only 18 hours of use. Engine hours are typically low for a summer PNW boat at only 1175. Sails are by North and lightly used. This boat would be suitable for continued Pacific Northwest cruising and “over the horizon” long distance cruising. Or easily trucked to the east coast for right coasters wanting and ICW capable center cockpit Passport.

Passport yachts are built by old world craftsman with modern specifications creating a classic and offshore capable vessel. The Passport design utilizes every inch of the interior allowing for a spacious living area. The raised trunk cabin provides for head room without inflating freeboard. Multiple fixed and opening ports and overhead hatches throughout the boat bring natural light to every corner. All overhead hatches are fitted with hinged wood-framed insect screens and Ocean air roller blinds. Cabin side ports are fitted with pleated blinds and opening ports have removable insect screens. The interior is delightfully bright and surrounded by teak paneling. All doors and cabinets latch positively closed with pop-out push catches. Solid teak handrails are well placed for offshore sailing. Red courtesy lights illuminate the cabin sole at night. Overhead lights are wall switched and three-way where sensible. Reading and task lights are numerous and well-placed. All plumbing fixtures are Grohe and chrome finished. 110v and 12V outlets are located throughout the interior.
Accommodation access is from a centerline companionway through louvered hinged teak doors and forward sliding stainless-framed smoked acrylic hatch. A ladder with five curved hardwood companionway steps equipped with inset nonskid mats is hinged and can be lifted for engine front access. A teak grate over plastic drip/dust pan at the ladder base lifts out to access the bilge areas. The steps lead down into an open salon with a “U” shaped settee with a hardwood, adjustable dinette to port. A smaller cocktail table can will replace the dining table atop the adjustable pedestal when entertaining. Two single settees separated by a drink/book table and countertop cabinets with storage on each side are to starboard. This table lifts, transforming this settee into a long single berth/seat. Behind the seating areas there is ample storage capacity with both enclosed cabinets with louvered doors and open fiddled shelves. The sole is teak with holly inlay and has many removable/lockable floor boards to access additional storage.
The walkthrough linear galley is located to starboard and is well equipped for extended voyages or entertaining on board for just an evening with friends. It has white fleck Corian counters with 2” high fiddles to ensure stationary placement of stowed items. The three burner propane stove/oven has a hardwood cutting board cover and is located outboard in the countertop center. Next to the stove is a garbage compacter. The 7 cubic foot refrigerator is top and front opening and has a sliding acrylic shelf. The 5.5 cubic foot freezer is top opening, also fitted with a sliding shelf and is aft of the fridge. Double louvered sliding teak door cabinets follow along the entire galley length with multiple drawers and cabinets. Double stainless steel sinks are on the centerline peninsula and measure 13” x 13” x 8” deep and 13” x 9” x 8” deep. Salt and fresh water foot pump faucets are fitted to the sinks. Above and to the right of the sink is a microwave oven while to the left as well as below are additional louvered door cabinets. Lighting in this galley is everywhere with dome lights and under cabinet lighting directing all illumes to the countertop, stove and sink. Two opening ports above the stove and one above the provide natural light and ventilation.
The large forward facing navigation station is in the center walkthrough to port and immediately left of the companionway. It is well suited to the needs of extended offshore voyaging by offering a quiet semi-secluded area to study and concentrate. A 30” wide by 28” deep chart table hinges to access a 3”deep chart drawer. Above the chart table are the flush mounted chart plotter and radar. The AC and DC switch panels are above and to the left of the chart table. A louvered cabinet is below the nav station seat and a hanging locker is behind. On the other side of the port walkthrough is a narrow cabinet for storing extra sheets, cleaning supplies or food.
The master stateroom is aft and is accessed from both port and starboard passageways. The Island centerline berth measures 75” long by 60” wide and is fitted with split a 6” thick foam mattresses. Custom step platforms on either side of the berth make climbing into and out of bed easy. Storage is found in an array of doors, hanging lockers, hinged and sliding door cabinets, and open shelves. Forward on centerline is a large locker with space and wire for a washing machine. It is now used as a “mini work shop.”
The aft head is located in the port passageway with entrance from the Nav station or aft cabin. Locking privacy doors enclose this space. The head with electric flush Tecma head is aft. Teak trimmed, white laminate faced surfaces make this compartment bright and easy to clean. The outboard vanity has a Corian counter with underhung stainless steel sink, Grohe faucet, soap dispenser, mirrored cabinet, drawers, and additional storage lockers. The separate shower stall is forward of the head and has a removable teak grate, fold down teak seat, and shower nozzle bar. Opening ports and diesel heater outlet will quickly dry up this space after showering.
To starboard of the main bulkhead, a locking privacy door leads to the forward stateroom. A “V” berth measures 78” long by 20” wide forward and 60” wide aft. A full sized chart storage drawer and two smaller drawers are beneath the bunk. Access to the chain locker is through two hinged solid doors forward. Two double door, hinged and louvered cabinets followed by an open bookshelf are on either side of the bunk below the deck edge. A large hanging locker and locker with shelves are aft to starboard.
The forward head is ensuite and entered through a locking privacy door. A marine head is forward, vanity with mirrored cabinet, Corian counter, stainless steel sink, pump soap dispenser, 110V duplex outlet, dome and task lighting, and storage drawer outboard, below the deck edge. The stall shower is aft of the head and is fitted with a shower curtain, removable teak grate, fold down teak seat, towel hooks, adjustable shower bar, opening port, and dome light.
“Margaret B2” has a white gel-coat hull with double blue boot stripes, gold cove stripe, and blue bottom antifouling paint. The flared, overhanging bow has relatively low spring to the modest freeboard. A reverse transom has a “scooped” swim step/boarding platform. Solid teak non-skid slats and a fold down swim ladder are fitted to the swim step. Stainless steel grab rails, hot/cold freshwater shower, and two 8” mooring cleats are also fitted. Two transom mounted stainless/teak steps afford easy main deck access. Fold down teak and stainless seat are located at each stern quarter.
A 4” high raised bulwark capped with a 4-1/2” wide varnished teak caprail surrounds the deck providing secure footing. A stainless steel rub rail is fitted to the outboard caprail edge to protect from pilings and other dangers. Six low point deck drains route water below the waterline to avoid hull side streaking. 30” high stainless steel stanchions support double plastic-coated lifelines which run between bow pulpit and stern pushpits. Midship’s boarding gates and stern boarding gate are fitted with snap hooks. A signature “Passport Yachts” bronze plate is flush mounted into the caprail at the side boarding gates. Six open chocks with stainless steel rollers are inset into the bulwark at the stern quarters, midships, and forward. The deck is finished in light blue/grey non-skid with white waterway breaks. The raised trunk cabin is white gel-coat and topped with blue/grey non-skid. A varnished teak eyebrow trim piece runs along the trunk cabin on each side. Stainless steel grab rails are also fitted to the outboard/top edge of the trunk fore and aft of the cockpit.
On deck storage is found in two large top opening quarter lockers. Locking handles, dome lights, gaskets and gutters service these lockers. A large, dedicated propane locker is forward aft on the starboard side deck. Two hinged storage cuddies are located in the aft cockpit coaming.
Anchoring systems on any cruising boat are of paramount importance. “Margaret B2” has double stainless steel bow rollers with cheeks integrally welded to the forestay stemhead chainplate. A Lighthouse stainless steel electric anchor windlass with line and chain gypsy manages the chain and line anchor rodes. A Danforth stern anchor hangs on the starboard quarter rail and is fitted with a short chain rode and Quickline webbing reel.
The spacious center cockpit is access via side coaming “cutouts” adjacent the helm. A blue yacht acrylic cockpit dodger and full enclosure shelter this space. Teak and rubber overlay the cockpit sole. Cockpit seats measure 18” wide by 82” long with 12” high seatbacks. A helm seat runs between the side seats aft of the wheel. Storage cuddies closed with smoked acrylic sliders are located forward in the coaming/seatback. Insets in the aft coaming/seatback in the back corners house the engine control panel, 12V outlet, and VHF radio. Two weather proof stereo speakers are forward. The steering pedestal is fitted with double Nav-pods, throttle and shift levers, and varnished teak drop leaf cockpit table. The companionway is forward and fitted with hinged, varnished teak removable doors, sliding smoked acrylic washboards, a stainless steel/acrylic sliding hatch, and two stainless steel top/side grabrails.
A copious selection of hatches, fixed and opening ports, cowl vents, and companionway provide light and illumination to the accommodation. All hatches and opening ports are fitted with insect screens. Two stainless steel opening ports open from the lower cockpit sides into the galley and nav area. Stainless steel guards protect the large cowl vents from line snares and provide extra on-deck handholds. Stainless steel mast-pulpit “granny bars” are located on each side of the mast; a secure place to hoist staysail or spinnaker, and deploy the whicker pole.
The Passport 456 is a proven design from the prolific and esteemed yacht designer Robert H. Perry. Her sloop rig and modest sailplan are configured for easy shorthanded sailing. Most sail controls are led aft to the cockpit. In-mast furling mainsail and roller furling jib allow one to easily deploy, reef, and douse sails from the safety of the cockpit. A staysail hanks onto an inner removable stay for high winds. A whisker pole is fitted for downwinds sailing and the cruising spinnaker deploys from a top down-furler. All sailing hardware is by Harken and well sized for ocean sailing.
“Margaret B2” is outfitted for cruising the Pacific Northwest and with minor updates she would be suitable to cruise to distant shores. Paper and electronic charts cover the Pacific Northwest.
