KAMD300 is the designation of Volvo Penta's powerful marine diesel engine in the 300-horsepower performance range. The new engine range further strengthen Volvo Penta's product program for planing boats.
The high-tech diesel engine is for planing boats extend Volvo Penta's well-known 40 series, produced at the company's Vara plant in Sweden. This electronically regulated and compressor-charged engine, equipped with turbo and air-charge cooler, represent state-of-the-art technology in marine diesel engines.
The powerful engine packages were developed in 2001. Boats equipped with the new engines will provide significantly improved performance, with higher top speeds, unbeatable acceleration, low noise levels and a vibration-free ride, ensuring outstanding onboard comfort.
Compact propulsion package
The new KA(M)D engine, has a unique cylinder block and a cylinder head design with improved cooling capacity, a modern 4-stroke air-charge cooler and a new turbo to match the increased power output. The injection system has been modified to provide increased capacity and pressure to match the new 5-hole injector. The expansion tank is mounted directly on the engine, as is the seawater filter.
Low fuel consumption gives low exhaust emissions and vibration-free operation
The in-line 6-cylinder, direct-injected marine diesel engine with 24-valve technology, EDC and advanced combustion system will minimize exhaust emissions, greatly improving comfort onboard.
The engine complies with IMO (International Maritime Organization) and RCD (Recreational Craft Directive) exhaust emission regulations.
Modern adapted EDC software
The KA(M)D300 is equipped with electronic diesel control (EDC) is a precision control system for the compressor, turbo and air-charge cooler that optimizes engine performance. Volvo Penta's EDC system, introduced in 1995, regulates the engine's fuel system. One great advantage of the EDC system is its monitoring of the fuel temperature, which maintains a constant engine power output at fuel temperatures between 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C.
The EDC system and instrumentation are easy to plug in. The EDC system also contains a self-diagnosis unit, which warns the boat driver if a problem arises.
As the full-service supplier of marine diesel engines with Aquamatic drive systems, Volvo Penta assumes total responsibility for the complete engine package is from development and production to sales and service. All components in the engine package are carefully tested and matched, guaranteeing high efficiency and reliability.
High-quality service and support for Volvo Penta products is available in more than 100 countries throughout the world. An advanced logistics system ensures that parts not held in stock can be located and delivered within 48 hours.

The Californian / Navigator 39SL was introduced in 1998 and continued in production until 2005. There were 31 built and "Sea Rider" is third to the last constructed in the Perris, California facility. The Thirty-Nine SL offers a layout that is virtually impossible to replicate in forty feet. With a fifteen foot beam and high freeboard the innovative interior provides a tremendous amount of space. The fiberglass swim platform provides a generous area and is the primary point of boarding the boat. The transom door is to starboard with one step up to the cockpit and salon level. Once in the cockpit a molded fiberglass staircase to starboard leads to the flybridge and the glass salon door is centerline and slides open to port. Both side decks are accessed outboard via three steps. The walk around side decks are safe and secure passages for going forward and are equipped with stainless steel handrails at hip level and shoulder rails on the cabin.
Entering the salon it becomes obvious that the interior volume is very expansive with abundant natural light and or ventilation from the opening windows port and starboard. The interior is finished in a neutral or light colored carpet and all wood work is varnished cherry, the condition shows very well. The L-shaped settee is to port and is upholstered in ultra leather perhaps buff in color.
The Galley is to starboard and is equipped with a Moen stainless steel sink and faucet, Corian countertops Tundra refrigerator/ freezer, Princess cooktop & sharp microwave.
Moving forward and up two steps to the U-shaped dinette and lower helm station. Very comfortable helm seat and raised dinette make this area the center most point on the vessel and provide excellent visibility and comfort.
Moving forward in the salon on port side the companionway leading down to the cabins is a carpeted stairway with five steps. The landing area is positioned between the master stateroom amidship and the guest head and stateroom forward. The midship master stateroom is gigantic on a 40' boat and is a full beam arrangement with queen sized bed on starboard side athwartship. There are two opening port lights above the head of the bed which provide fresh air and natural light. Storage is very generous with cabinets and drawers nearly everywhere. There is a 20" Sony TV and DVD player located port side at the foot of the bed. The owners head and shower is positioned starboard and forward of the stateroom.
The Guest stateroom is located in the forepeak and is equipped with a queen sized walk around island bed. The guest head and second stall shower is located on the port side (both toilets are freshwater Sealand Vacuflush).
The flybridge is equipped with the standard helm seat and L-shaped lounge aft. There is an additional folding chair aft and a optional factory companion seat to starboard. The fiberglass hardtop was designed and built by Steve DeGroote of C-Fab in Costa Mesa and features overhead lighting two opening hatches and a beautifully polished stainless steel structure. The four sided enclosure is a Rainier bonded polycarbonate window material. Aft is a dingy davit and support rack for a inflatable.
Entering the machinery space is done from the cockpit hatch via a three step ladder. All service points on the steering is easily access upon entering the area. The boat is equipped with a fuel polishing system that is positioned centerline and aft. There are additional engine temperature gauges mounted behind the ladder on starboard. The two fuel tanks are made of aluminum and are located just forward of the cockpit. The generator is located on the port side aft of the port engine. The water heater is located on the starboard side with one of the three 8D AGM batteries. The other two batteries are located outboard of the port engine. The overall condition is very good and access is excellent for future servicing.
