While six-feet shorter than her larger sister, the Nordhavn 40's waterline length is only three-feet less than that of the 46. The beam at the waterline is only six-inches less and the freeboard amidships is actually greater. As with the 46, the 40's bow rises to over eight feet above the waterline, and the measurement from keel to housetop of the 40 is six inches greater. This design will appeal to those considering a larger vessel. The Portuguese bridge provides the watchstander a safe exterior conning area but also provides a first line of defense for heavy water that might come over the bow. The solid coaming structure tends to deflect boarding water upward and away from the back sloping wheelhouse windows. It's hard for the water to hit the glass in a perpendicular and dangerous way. Within the well-protected wheelhouse, abundant space is provided for a complete selection of electronics. The rake of the forward wheelhouse windows also reduces interior heat and eliminates glare from primary instrumentation. Additionally, this design provides added space above the line of sight for smaller yet important instrumentation. This added space above the operator's eye level creates a feeling of spaciousness and a very pleasant operating environment. A full-size folding chart table is located on the port side near the pilothouse door and adequate chart storage is provided below. A folding helm seat is convenient for hand steering, and folds out of the way for autopilot operation and standup maneuvering during docking. The most comfortable seating for watchstanding is aft at the settee - with easy visibility of instrumentation and an unobstructed exterior view. A full-length watch berth, located aft of the settee, makes watchstanding easy with another person sleeping within arm's reach. Additionally, the settee will serve as another berth allowing double occupancy of the wheelhouse. The wheelhouse location allows for easier docking than a flybridge might. The helmsman is within easy reach of the port and starboard amidships cleats and can play an active role in line handling during docking. Double access to the boat deck is provided on the port and starboard sides. Access to the foredeck is provided through the Portuguese bridge door where two large integral deck lockers for storage are found. A low-profile cabinhouse provides headroom forward and two dorade vents for ventilation comfort belowdecks. Back into the wheelhouse and aft through the saloon, the cockpit offers more lounging space than the 46. There's comfortable seating - port and starboard - and easy swimming or tender access through the transom door onto an integral swimstep which stays dry even at full cruising speed. For dockside boarding, an additional door is provided on the starboard side. Portside boarding around the swimstep is convenient using the transom door. If it becomes necessary to move forward from the cockpit, ten-inch-wide walkways are provided on the port and starboard sides with plenty of handholds. While a conventional side deck (like the 46's) is desirable, this arrangement is very workable. During docking it is easy to pass from the wheelhouse through the saloon to the cockpit for line handling, and fenders can easily be hung from the boat deck. Even with the wheelhouse as far aft as it is, the full-width saloon and galley are large and comfortable. Forward is a sunken anchoring well which accommodates the windlass and insures the dirty run off during anchor retrieval is contained and drained to the waterline without streaking the hull, or fouling the after foredeck. A heavy, highly-polished stainless steel double bow roller insures a fairlead to the combination chainwheel and vertical windlass drum. These can be operated independently for use with two anchors. A large deck hatch is provided for fair weather ventilation and light within the owner's cabin below. The entire foredeck is surrounded with lifeline protection and includes a substantial stainless steel bow pulpit. With 120-square-feet of boat deck space, there's plenty of room for added deck boxes, bicycles, and cruising gear. An 11-foot tender can be accommodated athwartships at the aft end of the boat deck. The standard spar and boom are fitted with electric winches for easy launching off of either side of the vessel. As with all Nordhavn's, a high-level yacht finish is included throughout. Satin finished varnish, teak paneling and trim, Formica, soft vinyl headliners, Corian-type countertops, and fine hardware all complement the beautiful and traditional joinerwork. The main saloon and galley are comparable to the 46 with over 12 feet of combined width and length. The full-width saloon provides more than sufficient living space. On the starboard side, a settee measuring over eight-feet long provides lounging comfort and dining space with a dinette table of almost ten-square-feet. To port is a TV, and entertainment cabinet with extra space for an easy chair. Forward to starboard is added pantry space with room for an enclosed combination washer and dryer. The galley is laid out with ample locker, drawer, and counter space. There's lots of handholds and support for offshore use, yet the layout allows more than one person in the galley. Over nine-square-feet of floor space is provided which allows easy cabinet and refrigerator access. This creates the convenience and feel of a much larger vessel. For maximum storage, overhead lockers are included but their depth is limited to allow an easy interface between the galley and saloon. Space is provided for a standup refrigerator in a proper athwartship position; the stove and oven alcove is outboard while the microwave and vented hood are above. A trash compactor is also available. High-quality Grohe fixtures and Corian-type countertops are standard. The owner's cabin in the 40 is forward and features a queen-size berth, abundant space for drawers, lockers, and hanging lockers. It also includes ample counter and floor space and light. Natural ventilation comes from the dorade vent and hatch above, as well as the two hull-mounted opening ports. A small seating area is provided for dressing ease and over six-feet of book shelving is also included. Accommodations are provided for guests in a spacious cabin amidships on the port side of the vessel. Large comfortable upper and lower berths, ample drawer and locker space, and spacious seating insure guest comfort. Convenient access to the engine room is included through the guest cabin. Added access is also provided through the saloon sole. Adequate ventilation is maintained with a foredeck mounted dorade vent box and cowl vent ducted to the guest cabin. Two opening ports are also provided. A single head is provided with access from the main passageway. The head is accessible to all without disturbing a sleeping cabin and features large internal dimensions Significantly larger than the N46 owner's head, there's abundant storage, Corian-type countertops, Grohe sink and shower fixtures, vinyl flooring, an opening port for ventilation and light, and an exhaust blower. Primary access into the engine room is through a gasket-lined dogged door within the guest cabin. A hatch is provided through the cabin sole so inspections and easy access are possible without disturbing the guest cabin. Larger hatches are removable for replacement or installation of large equipment. Benefiting from the revolutionary Maintenance Strakes, this engine room features head room dimensions equal to the Nordhavn 50 with five-feet available within the primary engine space. The entire engine room is heavily insulated with two inches of sound-deadening material and completely paneled with attractive and durable, perforated, anodized aluminum sheeting. In addition to the standard systems, there's ample room within the engine compartment for an optional generator, wing engine, watermaker, etc. Service and inspection of machinery is simple within this spacious engine compartment. The large fuel capacity is contained within two fiberglass fuel tanks of approximately 400 gallons each. An easy-to-read sight gauge on each tank provides accurate fuel measuring and a centrally-located supply manifold allows for easy management of supply and return fuel. Fuel is drawn off of the bottom of each fuel tank rather than the top. If an operator wishes, both tanks can be drawn off of at the same time with fuel levels remaining equal on the port and starboard tanks. If athwartship trim is an issue, it can be controlled through fuel management. FRP tanks offer many advantages over metal such as the elimination of corrosion concerns, the sound attenuation benefits and the added rigidity which individual tanks provide when permanently bonded to the hull and cabin sole structure. The FRP tanks tend to be more expensive than iron, aluminum or even stainless steel, but the benefits warrant the expense. With the large capacity of the new 40, it may not be desirable to run with full tanks all the time. For local use, the vessel can be run more economically with a reduced fuel load and the FRP tanks make this operating option a safer one. With a metal tank, it is generally recommended to keep the tank full. A half-full tank will warm and cool over a 24-hour period drawing moist air into the vent lines. This moisture can condense on the tank sides and collect at the bottom of the tank. While reduced because of the thermal qualities of the FRP tank, this condensation will still find its way to the bottom of a glass fuel tank but it will not contribute to internal corrosion. An FRP tank is far better suited to handle these varying fuel load conditions. Within the Nordhavn 40 tanks, the finest vinylester resins are used. The tanks are individually molded, properly baffled and leak tested outside the vessel. A large inspection panel is provided and the tanks are permanently glassed in the hull and surrounding structure. An interesting note for skeptics of FRP for tank use is the fact that metal tanks have been completely disallowed for subterranean fuel storage (gas stations) with FRP as the approved alternative. The Nordhavn fuel tanks meet all the latest international standards and last the life time of the vessel. After hundreds of thousands of trouble-free operating hours aboard the Nordhavn 46, the Lugger, six-cylinder, 414 cubic John Deere-based engine has proven to be the perfect choice for the 40. The combination of propulsion engine, mounts, exhaust system, transmission, keel cooler and fuel system have been developed to perfection and the exact same system and accessories have been incorporated into the 40. Although Nordhavns have been built with twin engines, the 40 has been designed for single engine propulsion. With a displacement hull, people generally request twin engines for only two perceived reasons - reliability and low-speed docking maneuverability. We have selected the finest propulsion engine available and purposely derated it to its lowest commercial and continuous service rating. In fact, the engine is only producing about one horsepower for every four cubic inches of cylinder displacement. The Lugger 668 has been known to run over 80,000 hours between overhauls in a perfect operating environment. Additionally, the engine has been matched with a commercial-duty Twin Disk transmission which, in a pleasure boat application, can handle over three times as much horsepower as what the standard Lugger 668 can produce. The dry exhaust combined with keel cooling, a two-inch propeller shaft and heavy, low speed, fully-protected 33-inch propeller, provide the ultimate in reliability. An excellent argument can be made that this single engine installation can and will provide more reliability than a conventional twin engine vessel with high-output pleasure boat ratings, wet exhaust, heat exchanger cooling and high speed and exposed propellers. Due to this great reliability, it is not recommended to use auxiliary power on the 40 (for most cruising conditions). As with the larger Nordhavns, a well-designed and efficiently installed 'Wing Engine' is available as a popular option. This is a totally separate sailboat auxiliary of 27 hp, complete with transmission, wheelhouse controls, an independent electrical and starting system, and a separate shaft with a folding propeller. With this auxiliary, an operating speed of almost six knots can be maintained in calm conditions and electrical charging of the house batteries can be accomplished. Further enhancing reliability, economy and comfort, a commercial-style cooling and exhaust system is provided, insuring the best possible installation for the Lugger 668 engine marinized by Seattle's Alaska Diesel and Electric. With the keel cooler and dry exhaust, the intake thruhull, intake hoses, strainers, heat exchangers, vented loop, injected elbows, raw water pumps, belts etc. are all eliminated. The OEM, centrifugal, circulating pump simply circulates the coolant through a series of fluted, copper nickel tubes which are recessed into the underside of the Maintenance Strakes rather than through the added heat exchanger. Salt water never enters the hull or the engine. All of this significantly enhances reliability, reduces maintenance and even enhances efficiency. The typical engine-mounted raw water pump consumes up to two horsepower which adversely affects efficiency to a greater degree than the added drag of the flush-mounted keel cooler. Along with keel cooling, the dry exhaust is used. This routes the emissions directly from the exhaust manifold up through an exhaust locker to a MARCO silencer located in an FRP stack housing. As the exhaust exits the housing, it is routed all the way up to the mast head where it is vented high above the living space. Exhaust noise and obnoxious gas odor are both virtually nonexistent while underway. For long term use, this is very important and after days of passagemaking, a greatly appreciated feature. Hydraulic steering by Hynautic has been chosen based upon the success experienced on previous vessels. A bypass valve is provided as standard and an emergency tiller is included in the unlikely event of a steering failure. The vessel can be controlled from the aft deck with the lazarette hatch closed and the steering system inoperable. Directional control down swell is an absolute must for an oceangoing powerboat and this hull will excel. The stern sections are full to give great pitch dampening, lots of weight carrying capability and provides a very large lazarette for abundant storage. For serious offshore use, the 40 has been designed to accommodate the custom designed TPS (towed passive stabilizers). These provide optimum comfort offshore and work equally well at anchor. PAE designers have taken this time-proven system and developed it to virtual perfection. It includes an effortless retrieval system and a silent running rig (no running hum and whine). The saloon of the 40 is fitted with six upper drop slide opening windows with screens. These windows are nicely finished and ruggedly constructed with anodized aluminum frames, tough 3-8-inch tempered glass and heavy, well-designed hardware. They are fitted with storm plate receptacles for extreme conditions. Fixed wheel house side windows use a matching frame. The front wheelhouse windows also match but have a lower hinged vent plate which swings outboard at the bottom with double dogs and stainless steel supports for optimum ventilation. The frame and gasket design is exceptional and should provide maximum security, comfort and convenience. Massively constructed, four-hinge, gasketed, Dutch doors manufactured by Diamond Seaglaze are used in the wheelhouse with large external upper and lower locking dogs in addition to the latch set and deadbolt. A standard door (non-Dutch) with window is used at the entry to the saloon. These are ABS certified doors built to the highest standard to perform in the most rugged offshore conditions. This is the same gear as used on the Nordhavn 62. Nordhavn has incorporated commercial-duty, virtually indestructible but easily replaceable, hard rubber rails on both the sheer rail (three-inches) and the lower rub rail (two-inches). To maintain a yacht look, custom chrome bronze end fittings and transom corners have been custom cast. Natural ventilation is provided with water filtering dorade vent boxes and stainless steel cowl vents. Both the owner's cabin and guest cabin will receive a steady supply of fresh air even in the most inclement weather. The hull form is the most advanced Nordhavn ever, featuring a full-displacement and ballasted hull, a massive full-length keel and a powerful, completely protected rudder. Her hull has been completely computer modeled and she has undergone a complete testing program using the test tank facility at BC Research in Vancouver, Canada. After careful consideration, the conventional bow was chosen to insure a quiet ride upswell and the best possible steering qualities with seas, aft of the beam. The shape will provide limited lift allowing a respectable upper-end cruising speed without the annoying drag-inducing 'squat' so common to full-displacement hulls running at high speed - length ratios. Her hull includes a slight tunnel allowing room for a 32-inch, 4-bladed propeller. This large diameter allows greater efficiency, less cavatation, is quieter, has greater bollard pull which generally increases long range performance. Hull, deck, and major molded parts have been completely computer modeled and plugs are cut with the finest five-axis, computer-controlled milling machine available. Used to cut precision parts for Boeing Aircraft, the Northwest firm of Janicki Machine and Engineering has produced perfect plugs built to within thousandths of an inch of tolerance to insure a fairness and quality of fit impossible to duplicate using conventional methods. This is cutting edge technology for the marine industry and will surely change the shapes and finish standards for the finest of designs into which it is implemented. A complete set of precision, highly polished female molds have been produced with extensive detailing and flawless non skid surfaces. Pacific Seacraft was selected to build Nordhavn's newest designs.
