COMMENTS:

With just one caring owner since new, it is very difficult to put into words just how well presented this stunning yacht is. The words ‘immaculate’ are frequently overused, but CYGNET is genuinely the best presented yacht of this type and vintage we have ever had the pleasure of offering. From an era where Jeanneaus were still very much ‘hand-made’, she has a very different feel and quality to her more contemporary sisterships.

Originally specified by her owners to take part in the ARC (which they subsequently decided not to do) and extensively updated in recent seasons, CYGNETS main highlights are as follows:-

  • 3-cabin, 2-heads ‘owners layout’
  • Teak interior joinery
  • International Gelshield preventative epoxy system
  • Larger 63hp Yanmar engine with 3-bladed Maxprop propeller
  • Standing rigging replaced 2017
  • 2-speed Harken electric control winches positioned inboard of companionway (so can also be used for halyards)
  • Harken ball-bearing battencar system with mast track
  • Extensive canvas work including cockpit enclosure and sun awning
  • Honda 2kw petrol generator
  • Tender and outboard
  • Extensive safety equipment inventory including recent liferaft
  • Eberspacher diesel heating system
  • Radar and chart plotter

OWNER’S COMMENTS:

With early retirement due in 1998 and some 42 years of sailing and racing around the Solent and Brittany we looked to buy a yacht around 42’ capable of sailing the ARC in either 1999 or 2000 and to cruise the Caribbean whilst handlable by two people on a not unlimited budget.

After much research,  and having owned a succession of smaller  yachts,  we decided on the owners version of the Jeanneau 42.2,  which met our criteria of a fast cruiser (equipped with the performance rig) and capable of ocean passages together with excellent accommodation for two people.   A visit to Jeanneau at Les Herbiers at the build stage convinced us of their commitment to quality and by their use of solid laminate for hull strength with integral Kevlar in the moulding.  Our specification of electric self- tailing primary winches coupled with slab reefing for the fully battened mainsail make for easy boat handling along with the chosen option of the  63hp Yanmar diesel engine driving a three bladed feathering Maxprop provides the power to push adverse currents.

Since taking delivery of Cygnet in 1998 after her debut at the Southampton Boat Show of that years, we have cruised extensively the Frisian Islands, Holland, Belgium, France, including south Brittany, north Spain and the West Country.  Sadly, we did not sail the 1999 ARC in ‘Cygnet’ as we helped sail a friends yacht instead that year but were able to note that three 42.2’s went across with us, one from Germany and two from Sweden!  Cygnet has been kept in commission for 11 months each year with one month ashore (April) for refit, but every fifth year she has  been wintered ashore for the entire period of October – April.  Cygnet is now for sale as we move on to more sedate retirement activities and she is in need of a new owner to maximise her potential.

MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:

The Sun Odyssey 42.2 is very spacious for a sailing vessel of it's size, 12.80 meters. The boat is a result of our sound technological know-how and craftsmanship in the Jeanneau boatbuilding tradition. Its impressive hull has been shaped to face diverse conditions with the greatest of ease. Designed to be simple to sail and highly stable, the Sun Odyssey 42.2 marks a decisive turning point in the development of fast passage makers.

Even at anchor this cruiser presents unique and uncontested comfort, a yacht worthy of the name Jeanneau. The saloon exudes great warmth and style. The brilliantly finished materials shine throughout the bright interior. Jeanneau has designed the Sun Odyssey 42.2 for ocean navigation and invites you to discover the world of blue water sailing with more comfort than ever before. This boat easily accommodates a crew of 8 to 10 people helping to increase the pleasures of sailing mile after mile.
