From the outset of yacht production in 1970, ETAP has aimed to build the safest sailing boats in the world. The hull and deck are double skinned, the void being filled with injected foam providing enough buoyancy to keep the boat afloat and useable even when flooded. All internal surfaces are of a high quality finish removing the need for cabin linings and making for ease of cleaning.
Due to this type of construction the boats are thermally efficient, easier to heat, almost condensation free and have very good sound insulation making living aboard that little bit more comfortable. The wide, nonslip decks make moving around the boat easy. A single steel guard wire provides some security as does the tubular alloy toe rail which is also handy for tying fenders to.
The ballasted vertically lifting keel provides sailing efficiency while allowing a minimum draught of 70cm.
The boat is powered by an 8hp 2 stroke Yamaha engine which although old, we are told has always been extremely reliable. The engine is mounted in a central well under a lifting seat. The engine has the capacity for electric start but the current owner only used the boat as a day boat and has removed the battery. The motor would charge the battery if one were installed.
The remote fuel tank is located in the port-side cockpit locker.
The Bermudan rig has alloy spars with Stainless rigging wires.
The mainsail by Crusader has 2 reefing points and is in good condition being new in 2013. The Crusader furling genoa with sacrificial strip is also in good condition and was new in 2011. There is an asymmetric spinnaker the age of which is unknown but it is in fair condition.
All lines are led aft to the cockpit for ease of sail management and a lazy-jack bag helps make reefing and sail storage neat and simple. The mainsail has a good length traveller neatly mounted by the companionway and the bowsprit - normally cast alloy - was replaced in 2015 with a bespoke stainless steel model.
The ETAP 23iL sleeps 4 - two in the V berth bow cabin and two singles in the saloon.
The prominent keel box and forward bulkhead serve to break up what on many boats of this size would be a single open saloon cabin. On entering the saloon there is seating on either side which also doubles as the two single quarter berths. Stored under the companionway is a table which can be mounted in the cabin, providing comfortable dining space for 4 people but which can also be mounted in the cockpit for dining alfresco.
To port of the keel box is the sink and original siting for a two burner gas hob. The pipework is still in place but the stove has been removed. There is a good variety of built-in storage throughout the boat in the form of shelves and lockers. To starboard of the keel box is the route through to the fore-cabin and a chart table with more storage under, currently housing a portable single burner gas stove.
In the fore-cabin is the location for a sea toilet which has been removed and a V berth with large storage locker underneath. The cabin is separated from the main saloon by a privacy curtain.
The fresh water tank for the manually operated cold water system is located under the cockpit.
An unused chemical toilet stows away behind the companionway steps.
