Demand for 31 feet bilge keelers came to the fore in the mid 70's. The introduction of smaller Westerly's such as the Centaur, Pageant and Warwick had been extremely successful using the bilge keel design. When Westerly launched the Longbow in 1971 with her obvious sailing qualities and accommodation capabilities, it was soon apparent that a bilge keel or shallow draft option was required for the market.
The Berwick filled this demand. Solidly built, with bilge keel, her long waterline length gives her a good turn of speed. Her big semi-balanced rudder improves manoeuvrability in tight spaces under power and easy handling on the wheel when sailing. Well balanced in heavy weather if the main sail is stowed and sailing is under Jib and Mizzen. This is the flexibility offered by a ketch rig and makes life easier under two smaller sails in very strong winds.
Raised accommodation coach roof increases the volume in the boat allowing full standing headroom right up to the forward cabin. GRP hand laid hull with internal stringers and frames for strength and rigidity. Bulk heads bonded and tabbed to the hull.
Hull professionally resprayed in 2000. Epoxy treated.
Very spacious accommodation with 2 berths in the forward cabin. Moving aft on the port side a spacious heads with Lavac sea toilet and washbasin. Opposite the heads is storage hanging space in the two hanging lockers. The saloon gives ample, comfortable seating. Wooden drop leaf table with adjustable supports that allows complete conversion to a double berth. Plenty of storage space under and behind the port and starboard seating/berths, including a large coolbox.
The galley is on the starboard side and consists of a stainless steel sink, Vanessa gas cooker with 2 burners, grill and oven and another coolbox, plus plenty of cupboard/storage space. Opposite on the port side is a retractable chart table over a further berth/settee, which allows for more seating area when not in use.
All upholstery was new in 2009. At the same time all the headlining was replaced. Heating is provided by a diesel fired Eberspacher with outlets in the main cabin, forecabin and heads.
Ketch rigged with aluminium deck stepped mast. Stainless steel standing rigging. Ketchup still has the original roller boom furling system on the main boom, but currently has her main sail stowed in a stack pack with lazy jacks. Roller furling foresail. All sails are said to be in good condition.
Volvo Penta MD11C 23 horse power inboard diesel engine. Overhauled in 2005 and serviced yearly. Engine instruments include water temperature gauge and rev counter. 20 gallon fuel tank and two 12v marine batteries. One 12 months old and the other new.
