The vessel "DORCAS" is an original Ferro Cement design from the board of Thomas Colvin, N.A. and was built under the professional trades supervision guides of Bill Bray Auckland, New Zealand. Her keel was laid in 1976 and the vessel launched the following year.
"DORCAS" is rigged as a Staysail Schooner and has an auxiliary diesel engine.
The vessel was built for serious offshore and coastal voyaging. Her lines are traditional and very pleasant to the eye. She is contemporary to the period (1970's) of the more traditional sailing auxiliaries. Her bow has a modified clipper design with bowsprit and bobstay without a dolphin striker. Her lines are gentle by 70's standards, but remain firm as her sheer arises forward. She boasts a raised after step up deck (modified poop deck) and has a traditional raked wine glass transom with overhangs and a bumpkin.
She has a 'traditional' hull underbody with a full keel (very slightly cut away at the forefoot), and a keel-hung heart shaped rudder. She has modest overhangs fore and aft.
Her deck layout includes a large broad open foredeck area with horizontal hydraulic deck windlass, bow sprit and deck anchor chocking, with a hawse pipe and bow roller. Walkways lead aft along the port and starboard sides. They circumscribe a
traditional/ contemporary amidships trunk cabin (house) with an amidships cargo hatch - a design which harks back to trading schooners. The cockpit area is self-draining, large and allows ample seating - it has moderate sized coamings designed as ergonomic wraparound seating. A heavy duty bronze worm drive helm is provided.
The after deck follows, is broad and affords access an ample working area for dinghy davit access.
Below decks the vessel provides accommodations in three general cabin areas. Well
forward is access to a forward locker/ chain locker. The forward stateroom follows. This stateroom is provided a forward slightly athwartships queen sized berth with port and starboard locker storage and shelving. A desk is located to starboard. Just aft is the galley area. Here, to port is the stove/oven and refrigeration. To starboard and just forward of the companionway is a pantry. Stepping down and to port is the main lounge/saloon area.
To starboard is a wraparound settee; while to port is a storage area. Just aft again is access to the engine and electrics room where the engine and generator are located.
The aft house is provided for crew accommodations. Here there is a queen sized berth to starboard and a bench berth to port. The navigation station is aft again and to port with a navigation console and bench. The head is well aft and to starboard. The after deck is has a lazarette with below decks access to the steering gear.
The interior of the vessel is lined in Teak, Teak trim and joinery. Each is used tastefully along the interior hull sides and cabinetry. The vessel is professionally furnished complete with high quality (though used) upholstered cushions.
Dorcas is well-maintained and cosmetically in good shape in most all detail.
Interior furnishings are professionally finished with marine grade hardwoods. The cabin sole is hardwood and carpeted in places. Additional amenities include electric fans, interior lighting and gimbaled brass oil lamps.
Light, ventilation and access is provided by the forward deck scuttle hatch, six dorade vents, an amidships skylight hatch and a main companionway hatch. There are multiple fixed portlights.
The galley includes a Richmond Ring Shipmate three - burner kerosene fueled stove/oven combination, ice box, single basin sink with pressure and manual water, microwave oven, pantry, countertops and cabinetry.
The head includes a marine (marine quality-manual pump toilet), lavatory with pressure water.
The engine is located behind the main cabin galley/lounge and accessed by a hinged swinging door.
The masts are of a round steel construction. Each is deck-stepped, and supported to its base by compression posting and shoe atop her keel plate. Standing rigging is a
combination of galvanized steel, stainless steel 1 x 19 wire. Terminal ends are either
swaged, Nicro pressed, spliced parceled and served galvanized ends or combination. Rigging screws are of open-barrel, galvanized commercial grade steel. Each stay is
epoxy tar coated. Running rigging (Halyards and sheet lines) are Samson braid and three strand dacron. Genoa sail track, miscellaneous genoa blocks etc. are also provided .
The sail inventory is augmented in total by 21 sail bags. The main sails are previously listed. Each of the main sails is in very good operational condition.
Deck-mounted safety equipment includes forward hand railings, double-score lifelines, teak cabin top grab rails, bulwarks and moderate cockpit coamings.
The vessel's hull is constructed of Ferro-cement in the traditional Samson method. The keel was laid in 1976 when the vessel was professionally built under supervision using recommended materials.
The vessel hull was laid up using recognized materials and lay-up techniques following the system pioneered by Samson Marine. Samson Marine is considered the foremost in the Ferro-cement boat-building companies of this era.

The keel is a 'traditional' full keel with internally placed ballast. The original rudder is heart-shaped and keel hung on stainless steel flat bar stock at the heel plate.
The stem tube is 316 stainless steel, with a bronze propeller on the stainless steel tail shaft.
Through-hulls are of bronze with valves.
The beautiful clipper-bowed 25 ton Bermudan staysail schooner 'Dorcas' can now be yours as the long-term owners have decided to put her on the market. Dorcas is a Greek translation of the Aramaic name Tabitha, meaning "gazelle" and the grace of a gazelle is apparent in her lines. At 72 feet overall (52 feet on the waterline, 15 feet beam) she is a true 'little ship', very comfortable and stable at sea with her long keel (6.25 feet draft, 1.5 tons lead ballast) and moderate displacement. Savvy sailors know that a schooner is rig is very handy on this size of vessel as all sails are of easily manageable proportions, so she is easily handled by a couple. When there's little wind her 85 h.p. Perkins 6.354 6 cylinder turbo diesel will comfortably and economically maintain her cruising schedule. Anchoring is easy with her manual windlass.
Her spacious accommodation includes 2 staterooms with queen sized berths plus an extra single berth (excluding saloon area). Her galley has most modern facilities including a 3 burner range/oven and microwave oven. Plenty of pressurized fresh water for those long term voyages. The current owners have followed the KISS principle, preferring to spend their time cruising instead of fixing the vast array of complex equipment present on many modern boats. Nevertheless, she has a electric autopilot and a wide range of electronic navigation equipment.
Designed by the renowned Naval Architect, Thomas Colvin, N.A., along the lines of a trading schooner, she was professionally built in ferro-cement by William Bray of Auckland, New Zealand in 1976 following the dependable 'Samson' method.
She is fully equipped for cruising and passed her latest insurance survey with flying colors in line with USCG A-1 and ABYC standards. All minor work recommended by the surveyor has been carried out.
Recently painted with 6 coats of bottom paint, 2 coats of west system epoxy and a fresh topsides paint job, her engine is sound, her sails are in good condition and she is ready for her next cruising adventure with new owners, whether locally on the Islands or much further afield. COULD BE YOU!
