A beautiful, well-kept 1920 Crowinshield-designed Manchester 17, SHOOTING STAR is a pure sailing machine of great beauty. She is large enough to offer considerable comfort through a larger cockpit well and small cuddy cabin. Her low freeboard combined with a wide selfbailing cockpit well puts you very close to the water for a singular sailing experience. The slender hull line, long ends, deep draft and large rig provide a wonderfully sweet feel in this powerful, fast and responsive boat.
She was substantially rebuilt in 1998. Hull redone, new plywood decks coated with fiberglass, yard maintained - stored indoors - earth floor - Sails new 2012 - Canvas new 2011. Highly recommended - Beautiful boat - Terrific value.

Similar in design to the Dark Harbor 17, the Manchester 17 is so named because it was created as a one-design class of knockabouts for the Manchester Yacht Club in 1908. These beauties served as the Club's one-design boat for over two decades and the class became one of the most popular and long-lived of the knockabouts. About 300 were built and its design spawned the Dark Harbor 17, the Bucks Harbor 17, and the North Haven 17, all derived from the Manchester 17. With a 25'10" LOA and 17' 3" waterline, the Manchesters are still raced as a class on Eggemoggin Reach.
SHOOTING STAR, a Bristol condition original, was built by the Lawley yard in 1920 for MYC member Charles A. Welch. Later renamed SHOOTING STAR, she was substantially rebuilt in the late nineties. Her topsides and bottom are carvel planked cedar over oak frames, and her decks are plywood with a fiberglass overlay. Her spars are Sitka spruce; her transom and curved trunk are mahogany. She has been yard-maintained since her rebuild and includes a new set of sails and full canvas covers.
